The Four Elements- Fire, Water, Air, Earth

The Four Elements are basic building blocks in any ritual ceremony. For each and every New Moon, Full Moon, 8 of the Turning of the Wheel of the Year Ceremonies, Dream Work or for any personal ceremony or ritual, the 4 Elements must be called in as watchers, Guardians, and  holders for the Ritual. All ancient traditions call upon the 4 elements.
The 4 elements form the basic building blocks of the Tarot. This is an outline on some basic information on what each of the elements symbolizes, Native Shamanistic Directions and Wiccan, and the Astrology Signs related to each of the elements. I hope you find it usefull.

I am in processs of producing a DVD based on the 4 elements, for use as a meditation, relaxation and instructional tool. Stay tuned.

Fire by Arcimboldo

Fire

The element of Fire is SPIRIT, it is Light, the Sun, the flame, the Stars, the Creative Source of all Light and Life. It is energy, illumination and Enlightenment. It is heat, warmth, protection, active, dynamic, expansive, masculine, blood, sap, the will, healing also destructive, purifying and transforming. Volcanoes, deserts, lightning, eruptions and explosions are all fiery.
We have Fire in our bellies, we are human furnaces. We are stars. Colours associated with Fire are Red or Yellow, crimson, gold, orange or white.  The time of day is noon when the Sun is at its zenith.  Fire is related to the sense of Sight and the Season of Summer.  It's jewel is a Fire Opal.  Its metal gold.

Plants related to fire are: chillies,  mustard, onions, garlic, hibiscus, nettle, red peppers, red poppies.

Animals: Fire-breathing dragons, salamanders, lions, the Phoenix, and horses, when their hooves strike sparks.

Goddesses of Fire: Pele,Vesta, Hestia, Brigit
Gods of Fire: Vulcan, Hephaestus, Horus, Agni

In the Native American Tradition that I utilise, Fire is in the Direction of the East, where the Sun rises every day. Different traditions have the elements in different directions, usually according to where they are situated. In the Wicca tradition Fire is in the South.  It's incense is Olibanum.

Fire signs Astrologically:

Aries, the first, Fire sign, Cardinal mode.
Leo the 2nd, a Fixed sign.

Water

Water

The Element of Water symbolizes the emotions, the heart, feelings, love, sorrow. It is Feminine, it is fertile, it flows, dissolves all hardness, is mutable and takes the shape of whatever contains it. Water is the Oceans, the womb, the unconscious, memories and intuition. We are made up of 70% water ,mirroring the oceans content on the Earth. We are all born from water in the womb. Our tears are salty memories of the origins of life evolving out of the Oceans. Water is the tides, wells, springs, ponds, rivers, lakes, seas, rain, sleet, snow and hail. Water mirrors our reflections. Water generates and nurtures all life, plants, makes all green things grow.  We need water to live.  Water is associated with the colours blue or green., indigo and black. Aquamarines  are Waters' jewels. It's time is twilight and the season of Autumn. It rules the sense of taste. Its' tree is the water drinking willow.

Animals: dolphins, whales and porpoises, fish, seals, and sea mammals, water dwelling snakes, all water creatures and sea birds, dragons as sea serpents. Leviathan.

Plants: ferns, lotuses, mosses, rushes, seaweeds, water lillies, all water plants.

Goddesses: Mariamne, May, Marie, Aphrodite, Isis, Tiamat
Gods: Neptune, Poseidon, Osiris,Ea,

In the Native American tradition I utilize water is the Direction of the South. Place of the Heart, emotions. The Native Americans and the Tibetans consider the heart to be the mind, not the brain. The South, water is the Place of Innocence and Trust. The Wiccan Tradition sees Water in the Direction of the West. Ancient peoples used water as a burial place. As we came forth, so we return.

Water Signs Astrologically are:
Cancer, 1st  Water sign, Cardinal Mode.
Scorpio, 2nd Water Sign, Fixed Mode.
Pisces, 3rd Water Sign, Mutable Mode.

In the Tarot, Cups  representing Water. All the Suit of Cups represent emotional matters and feelings.

Air by Arcimboldo

AIR

Air symbolizes the Mind, thinking, communications all intuitive and psychic work. Knowledge, abstract learning, theory, transportation, windswept hills, plains, windy beaches, tornadoes, hurricanes, lofty mountain peaks, high towers, all connect with the Element of Air. Thoughts travel in the air, quickly, like the wind. Birds live in the element of Air. Air is also the Breath of Life. We can only survive for a few minutes without Air. Air is a medium of transference, travel, flight, flights of the imagination, the magic Carpet Ride. Thinking is the best way to travel. Our thoughts create our Reality. Air is also the place to connect with the Enlightened Master Teachers, with Wisdom. Air symbolizes intellect. Things manifest "out of thin air." The Rainbow exists in Air. Things can be undefined-"up in the air." we can have our heads "in the clouds." Colours connected to Air are white, bright yellow, crimson, blue-white. Scents are also carried in air.

Plants; Frankincense, myrhh, pansy, primrose, vervain, violet, yarrow
Incense: Galbanum
Animals: birds

Shamanically, in the Native American Tradition which I use, Air is in the North Direction, like our heads, they are North on our bodies. north is always related to Wisdom. It relates to elders, memories, knowledge.
In the Wiccan tradition Air symbolizes the East and Dawn, the Eagle, the Hawk, the Winds.  The Condor in South American shamanism.

The Element of Earth is the physical realm, Gaia, 3-D, the material World. It is hard core, the Body. It is what is tangible; growth Nature, groves, fields, grains, forests, standing stones, crystals, jewels and metals. The Earth element is the Element of Building, Learning, History. The Earth is Feminine, our bones, our "reality." The Earth is our mother Planet, and supports all physical life forms. We are all born physically of the Feminine. Earth is the densest, the most compact of all the elements. Earth is home to all the elements. The Earth is mountains, caves, graves, silence. She endures, she holds knowledge, she nurtures. We are born of the Earth, we return our bones, our robes to the Earth. "From dust, to dust.." We are star and earth dust. We are salt, the salt of the Earth. Colours for the Earth are brown, black, green and white. In the Kabbala, Earth is called Malkuth, the Foundation.

Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna, Lakshmi, Tara, Quan Yin, Goddesses of a thousand names, is who I call in when invoking the Earth. Persephone, Ceres, Inanna, Gaea are particularly Earth Goddessess.

In the Wicca tradition Earth is in the North. The Oak tree is related to it.
